Our Take
If the Thanos Mitsalas / Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra / Miltos Logiadis collaboration on Sergio Assad's Naoussa Concerto & Concerto Do Rio was a meal, it would be like ordering a fancy, experimental dish at a Michelin-starred restaurant only to find out it's just a fancy version of macaroni and cheese. The album starts off with high hopes, promising a blend of classical and Brazilian musical traditions that will transport you to a tropical paradise. However, as you dig deeper into the tracks, you realize that the melodies are as predictable as a pop song on repeat. The Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra tries their best to breathe life into the compositions, but ultimately falls short of creating any lasting impressions. Mitsalas' guitar work is technically sound, but lacks the emotional depth needed to truly connect with the listener. Overall, Naoussa Concerto & Concerto Do Rio is a missed opportunity for an exciting fusion of styles.
