Our Take

Napalm Death's debut album "Scum" is a ferocious sonic assault that leaves the listener feeling like they've been run over by a speeding double-decker bus. This 1987 release is a landmark in the development of grindcore, a genre known for its lightning-fast tempos, guttural vocals, and unrelenting aggression. From the opening track "Multinational Corporations", which clocks in at a mere 1 minute and 3 seconds, to the closing epic "Control", there is not a moment of respite on this album. The band's message of political and social upheaval is delivered with such intensity that it's impossible not to be affected by it. The musicianship on "Scum" is absolutely blistering, with Mick Harris's machine gun drumming propelling the songs forward at breakneck speed, while the dual guitar assault of Shane Embury and Bill Steer creates a wall of sound that is both punishing and exhilarating. Frontman Lee Dorrian's vocals are a force of nature, alternating between guttural growls and blood-curdling screams with the precision of a surgical knife. His lyrics, which touch on themes of war, corruption, and environmental destruction, hit like a ton of bricks. In conclusion, "Scum" is a visceral, uncompromising masterpiece that will leave you gasping for breath and wanting more. It's a must-listen for fans of extreme music, and a testament to the power of music to provoke thought and incite change.
