Our Take
Our Take
METALLICA S&M is like a wild night out in East London - full of surprises, questionable decisions, and a whole lot of noise. This live album sees the metal titans teaming up with the San Francisco Symphony for a truly unique performance that combines the raw energy of rock with the elegant finesse of classical music.
From the moment the orchestra kicks in on "The Ecstasy of Gold," you know you're in for a wild ride. Metallica's blistering guitars and thunderous drums are met with sweeping strings and grandiose horns, creating a sound that is both epic and exhilarating. The band's classic hits like "Master of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman" are given a new lease of life with the addition of orchestral arrangements, adding a layer of depth and complexity to their already intense sound.
But it's not all smooth sailing. Some tracks, like the sprawling "The Call of Ktulu," can feel a bit bloated and overindulgent, like a night out that's gone on a bit too long. And while the symphony adds an interesting twist to the band's sound, it can sometimes feel like they're trying a bit too hard to impress.
Overall, METALLICA S&M is a bold and ambitious experiment that showcases the band's willingness to push boundaries and try something new. It may not be for everyone, but for those willing to take the plunge, it's a wild and exhilarating ride that's sure to leave you breathless and wanting more.

About the artist
Metallica
Metallica: The Fearsome Four Horsemen of Heavy Metal With their thunderous riffs, blistering solos, and anthemic choruses, Metallica have cemented their place as one of the most influential and iconic bands in the history of heavy metal. Formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, the band burst onto the scene with their debut album, "Kill 'Em All," in 1983, and never looked back. Led by the charismatic frontman James Hetfield, whose gravelly vocals and intense stage presence have become synonymous with the band's sound, Metallica quickly established themselves as masters of the thrash metal genre. Their second album, "Ride the Lightning," and third album, "Master of Puppets," are considered classics of the genre, showcasing the band's virtuosic musicianship and knack for crafting epic, multi-layered songs. But it was their breakout self-titled album, commonly known as "The Black Album," released in 1991, that propelled Metallica to mainstream success. Featuring hits like "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters," the album showcased a more refined, radio-friendly sound while still retaining the band's trademark intensity. Over the years, Metallica have faced their fair share of controversies, from the infamous Napster lawsuit to the polarizing collaborations with Lou Reed and the misguided foray into the world of St. Anger snare drums. Despite these missteps, the band have persevered and continued to push the boundaries of metal music, earning them a dedicated global fanbase and a place in the rock 'n' roll hall of fame. So, grab your leather jacket, crank up the volume, and get ready to headbang with Metallica – the fearsome four horsemen of heavy metal.
