Russell Watson? More like Rusty Pipes! Okay, that may be a bit harsh, but let's be real, we were expecting fireworks and we got more of a damp sparkler with his latest album "20."
The vocal powerhouse, known for his classical crossover hits, tries to showcase his versatility with a mix of covers and original tracks on this album. And while his voice is still undeniably strong, there's something missing here - the magic that made us fall in love with him in the first place.
Tracks like "Caruso" and "Nessun Dorma" showcase Watson's impressive vocal range, but the arrangements feel a bit stale, like they've been gathering dust since the 90s. And don't even get me started on the title track "20" - a forgettable attempt at a pop ballad that falls flat.
But it's not all bad news. Watson's rendition of "You Raise Me Up" is a standout moment on the album, showcasing his emotional depth and ability to connect with his audience. And the stripped-down acoustic version of "Time To Say Goodbye" brings a fresh perspective to a classic tune.
In the end, "20" feels more like a missed opportunity than a triumphant comeback. Watson still has the voice, but we're left craving more substance and innovation from this seasoned performer. Maybe next time, Rusty!
