Our Take
Our Take
Ah, John Butler, the man with a guitar as nimble as a squirrel on a power line. Running River sees the Australian troubadour diving headfirst into the murky waters of folk rock, with mixed results.
The album kicks off with the title track, "Running River," a jaunty tune that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Butler's intricate fingerpicking is as impressive as ever, but the overly earnest lyrics about rivers and nature veer dangerously close to a parody of the genre.
Things pick up with "Heart of Gold," a soulful ballad that showcases Butler's knack for storytelling. The track builds to a rousing crescendo, with Butler's fiery vocals reaching heights previously unseen. It's a real standout moment on an otherwise lacklustre album.
Unfortunately, Running River loses its way towards the middle, with forgettable tracks like "Lost in the Woods" and "Moonlit Haze" failing to leave a lasting impression. Butler's virtuoso guitar skills are on full display, but they're not enough to save these songs from sinking into the abyss of mediocrity.
But just when all seems lost, Butler bounces back with the epic closer, "Sunset Serenade." The track is a tour de force of emotion and technical prowess, leaving the listener breathless and begging for more.
In the end, Running River is a mixed bag. While Butler's talent is undeniable, the album falls short of reaching the lofty heights of his previous work. Here's hoping that the next river he runs is a bit smoother.
