Our Take

Every now and then, an album comes along that simply blows your socks off. Daniel Tompkins' latest release, "Ruins," is not one of those albums. In fact, it might just be the musical equivalent of finding a mouldy sandwich at the back of your fridge - disappointing, unappetizing, and a bit past its sell-by date. From the get-go, Tompkins' vocals sound more strained than a pair of old knickers on wash day. His attempts at emotion come across as more comical than moving, like a cat trying to meow along to a Metallica song. The instrumentation, meanwhile, is about as inventive as a doorstop. Sure, there's the occasional twiddly guitar solo and a sprinkle of electronic beats, but overall, it feels about as fresh as last night's takeaway. Lyrically, "Ruins" doesn't fare much better. Tompkins tries to delve into deep, existential themes, but ends up sounding more like a teenager who's just discovered Nietzsche for the first time. Lines like "I am but a soul trapped in this mortal coil" may sound profound on paper, but in the context of this album, they just come across as pretentious waffle. Overall, "Ruins" is a forgettable listen that feels more like a chore than a pleasure. If you're looking for some truly groundbreaking music, you'd be better off digging through your local charity shop's vinyl collection. At least there you might find something worth listening to. Verdict: 3.4/10.
