Our Take

MAUNO's latest album, "Rough Masterin," is a rollercoaster of quirky indie rock that will leave you feeling simultaneously confused and delighted. The Canadian band's unique blend of jangly guitars, off-kilter rhythms, and infectious melodies is sure to make you wonder why you haven't heard of them sooner.

From the opening track "Gnarly Glitter," which features an earworm of a guitar riff that will bounce around your head for days, to the dreamy atmospherics of "Moon Pulls," MAUNO prove themselves to be masters of crafting catchy, unpredictable tunes.

Lead singer Eliza Niemi's ethereal vocals float above the band's tight instrumentation, creating a sound that is equal parts whimsical and sophisticated. The band's willingness to experiment with different sonic textures and song structures keeps things interesting throughout the album, never allowing the listener to get too comfortable.

"Rough Masterin" may not be a perfect album - at times, the band's penchant for eccentricity veers into self-indulgence, and some tracks feel a bit unfocused - but its sheer charm and inventiveness make it a joy to listen to. If you're a fan of bands like Deerhoof or Dirty Projectors, MAUNO is definitely worth a listen.

So grab your headphones, sit back, and let the weird and wonderful world of MAUNO wash over you. You won't regret it.
