Our Take

Ah, Robbie Robertson, the man, the myth, the... well, mostly the myth. The former Band guitarist and songwriter has returned with a self-titled album that is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Robertson’s signature laid-back style is present throughout the album, but unfortunately, it feels more like laziness than a deliberate choice. Tracks like “I Hear You Paint Houses” and “Once Were Brothers” lack the energy and passion that made his work with The Band so compelling.

The production on the album is also a bit lackluster, with bland arrangements and forgettable melodies. It’s clear that Robertson is playing it safe with this release, sticking to what he knows rather than pushing the boundaries of his sound.

That being said, there are a few bright spots on the album. “Let Love Reign” and “Wandering Souls” show flashes of the brilliance that made Robertson a legend in the first place.

Overall, Robbie Robertson’s self-titled album is a disappointing offering from an artist who has proven time and time again that he is capable of so much more. Here’s hoping that his next release will have a bit more spark and creativity. But for now, this one is a pass.
