Our Take
Ah, the Roland Kirk Quartet's "Rip, Ring & Panic", a delightful romp through the world of jazz that will have you tapping your feet and scratching your head in equal measure. Kirk's trademark mix of soulful saxophone wails and dizzying flute solos are on full display, backed by a tight-knit quartet that manages to keep up with his every twist and turn. From the chaotic opener "Rip, Rig & Panic" to the laid-back groove of "Ebrauqs", Kirk takes the listener on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and musical styles. Each track is a mini adventure in its own right, with unexpected shifts in tempo and mood keeping you on your toes throughout. But it's not all about Kirk's virtuosic playing - his bandmates more than hold their own, with pianist Ron Burton providing a solid foundation for Kirk's flights of fancy, while drummer Steve McCraven and bassist Carl Pruitt keep the rhythm section locked in tight. In true Kirk fashion, the album closes with a reimagining of a classic jazz standard, "Getting Sentimental Over You", which sees Kirk pushing the boundaries of the song in ways that only he can. Overall, "Rip, Ring & Panic" is a thrilling ride that will leave you wanting more. Kirk may be gone, but his music lives on in all its mad genius glory.
