Our Take
Our Take
After decades of rock 'n' roll shenanigans with Deep Purple, Ian Gillan decided to shake things up by forming his own band. Fast forward to 1973, and the Ian Gillan Band drops "Return to the Source," a funky, bluesy, and surprisingly experimental album that showcases Gillan's underrated songwriting chops. From the soulful grooves of "Fighting Man" to the prog rock epic "Message in a Bottle," this album is a wild ride from start to finish.
The musicianship on display here is top-notch, with standout performances from keyboardist Colin Towns and guitarist Ray Fenwick. Gillan's signature wails and screams are as powerful as ever, proving that age hasn't dulled his vocal prowess. The production may feel a bit dated at times, but that only adds to the album's charm.
"Return to the Source" is a must-listen for fans of classic rock looking for something a little off the beaten path. Gillan and his bandmates take risks and push boundaries, resulting in a truly unique listening experience. So grab your air guitar and get ready to rock out to the sounds of the Ian Gillan Band. Trust us, you won't be disappointed.

About the artist
Ian Gillan Band
IAN GILLAN BAND: If ever there was a man who embodied the term "rock god," it would have to be Ian Gillan. Known for his soaring vocals and electrifying stage presence, Gillan first gained fame as the frontman for legendary hard rock band Deep Purple. But in the mid-1970s, he struck out on his own and formed the Ian Gillan Band, a musical powerhouse that blended elements of rock, jazz, and funk into a sound that was uniquely their own. With Gillan at the helm, the band released a string of critically acclaimed albums, including the funk-inflected "Clear Air Turbulence" and the jazz-rock masterpiece "Scarabus." Famed for his distinctive growl and stunning vocal range, Gillan's voice was truly an instrument in its own right, soaring effortlessly over complex musical arrangements with ease. But it wasn't just Gillan's vocals that set the Ian Gillan Band apart from their peers. The band was also known for their tight musicianship and innovative songwriting, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in rock music at the time. Tracks like "Money Lender" and "Over the Hill" showcased the band's technical prowess and willingness to experiment with different musical genres. Although the Ian Gillan Band may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as Deep Purple, their influence on the rock music scene can still be felt to this day. With a sound that was as bold and boundary-pushing as their frontman, the Ian Gillan Band remains a true icon of the 1970s rock 'n' roll landscape.
