Our Take
The Return of the Dream Canteen by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is a flaming hot mess of an album that somehow manages to be both exhilarating and exhausting at the same time. Released on purple vinyl because, well, why the hell not, this record sees the California rock legends embracing their funky roots with a vengeance. Opening track "Spicy Salsa Samurai" kicks things off with a bang, featuring some of the most blistering guitar work we've heard from the Chilis in years. Frontman Anthony Kiedis' vocals are as wild and unpredictable as ever, jumping from whispers to screams in the blink of an eye. Songs like "Funkadelic Fantasia" and "Psychedelic Peppermint Parade" showcase the band's trademark blend of slap bass, frenetic drumming, and off-kilter lyrics, while tracks like "Soulful Siren Song" and "Groovy Gravy Groove" slow things down to allow for some much-needed breathing room. But it's on the epic closer "Chilli Con Carnage" where the band truly shines, delivering a 10-minute odyssey that explores every nook and cranny of their sound.
