Our Take

Finnish power metal veterans Stratovarius return with their ninth studio album, Polaris, and boy does it pack a punch. The band's signature blend of virtuosic musicianship and epic storytelling is on full display here, with soaring vocals, shredding riffs, and fist-pumping anthems galore.

Lead singer Timo Kotipelto's vocals are as strong as ever, effortlessly hitting high notes that would make even Bruce Dickinson jealous. Guitarist Matias Kupiainen's lightning-fast solos are like a shot of adrenaline straight to the veins, while keyboardist Jens Johansson adds layers of symphonic grandeur to every track.

From the fist-pumping opener "Deep Unknown" to the epic ballad "Forever is Today," Polaris is a masterclass in power metal craftsmanship. The band's impeccable musicianship and tight songwriting shine on every track, with each member getting their moment in the spotlight.

But what really sets Stratovarius apart is their ability to inject a sense of fun and playfulness into their music, never taking themselves too seriously. Songs like "King of Nothing" and "Emancipation Suite" are both epic and tongue-in-cheek, showcasing the band's unique sense of humour.

Overall, Polaris is a triumphant return for Stratovarius, proving once again why they are hailed as one of the kings of power metal. So grab your sword, raise it high, and prepare to embark on a journey through the power metal landscape with Polaris as your soundtrack.

About the artist

Stratovarius

Finnish power metal legends Stratovarius have been melting faces and blowing minds since the early 1990s. With their epic, virtuosic musicianship and soaring, operatic vocals, these guys are like the Wagner of metal--except with way more denim and leather. Formed in 1984 in Helsinki, Stratovarius quickly made a name for themselves with their technical prowess and catchy hooks. Guitarist Timo Tolkki, keyboardist Jens Johansson, and vocalist Timo Kotipelto are just a few of the virtuosos that make up this powerhouse of a band. Their music is a unique blend of classical influences, melodic metal riffs, and hair-raising solos that will make even the most hardened headbanger shed a tear (of joy, of course). Songs like "Black Diamond" and "Hunting High and Low" showcase their ability to seamlessly blend high-speed riffage with emotionally charged melodies. But it's not all serious business with these guys. Known for their playful, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and penchant for over-the-top theatrics, Stratovarius know how to have a good time. Whether they're rocking out on stage or goofing off in interviews, these guys never fail to entertain. With a discography that spans over 30 years and includes over 15 albums, Stratovarius are true veterans of the metal scene. And with their relentless touring schedule and passionate fanbase, it's clear that these guys aren't slowing down anytime soon. Bow down to the gods of power metal, because Stratovarius are here to stay.
