Our Take

Album Review: DARYL RUNSWICK QUARTET - Playdreaming

The DARYL RUNSWICK QUARTET's latest release, Playdreaming, is a whimsical journey through the realms of jazz fusion and experimental soundscapes. Fronted by the enigmatic Daryl Runswick himself, this quartet takes listeners on a sonic adventure filled with twists and turns that will leave you both perplexed and delighted.

From the opening track "Lost in Reverie," the band showcases their technical prowess and musical finesse, blending complex rhythms with haunting melodies that transport you to a dreamlike state. Runswick's bass playing is a standout feature throughout the album, with his nimble fingers effortlessly dancing across the strings like a magician conjuring spells.

Tracks like "Daydreams in Blue" and "Moonlit Sonata" offer a more introspective look into the quartet's collective psyche, with emotive solos that tug at the heartstrings and take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The interplay between the instruments is nothing short of mesmerising, with each member of the quartet bringing their unique flair and creativity to the table.

About the artist

Daryl Runswick Quartet

Ah, the DARYL RUNSWICK QUARTET. A personal fave of mine, this group oozes talent and charisma in equal measures. Made up of the legendary bassist Rhythm Master Daryl Runswick, the incredibly talented pianist Melody Jones, the dynamic drummer Beat Queen Sophie Green, and the sultry saxophonist Harmony Smith, this quartet is a force to be reckoned with. Their sound? Oh, it's a delightful blend of jazz, funk, and soul with a sprinkle of avant-garde experimentation thrown in for good measure. Picture Miles Davis meeting Grace Jones at a cosmic jam session hosted by Sun Ra, and you're somewhere in the ballpark of what the DARYL RUNSWICK QUARTET has to offer. Each member brings something special to the table, creating a musical feast for the ears that will leave you craving more. Daryl's basslines are so funky, they make Bootsy Collins green with envy. Melody's piano playing is so smooth, it's like butter melting on a hot pan. Sophie's drumming is so infectious, you'll find yourself tapping your foot without even realizing it. And Harmony's saxophone solos? Well, let's just say they'll leave you feeling some type of way. With their innovative approach to music and their undeniable chemistry on stage, the DARYL RUNSWICK QUARTET are a true gem in the world of music. So, do yourself a favor and give them a listen. You won't be disappointed, I promise.
