Our Take
Our Take
Ah, Bernard Butler, the man with the golden touch on the guitar. After breaking hearts with Suede, he’s back with his debut solo album, “People Move On” – and oh boy, do people move on from this album quickly.
From the opening track, “Stay,” Butler’s guitar work shines through like a beacon of hope in the fog of mediocrity. His signature riffage is on full display, but sadly, it’s not enough to save this sinking ship.
The album’s production, while slick and polished, lacks the raw edge that made Butler’s work with Suede so captivating. It all feels a bit too safe, a bit too predictable – like Butler is playing it by the book instead of following his instincts.
Tracks like “Not Alone” and “A Change of Heart” meander along aimlessly, never really hitting their stride or delivering that killer hook that hooks you in. Even the presence of guest vocalists like David McAlmont and Edwyn Collins can’t save this sinking ship.
In the end, “People Move On” is a forgettable album from a musician who has proven he’s capable of so much more. Butler’s talent is undeniable, but on this outing, it feels like he’s lost his way. Let’s hope he finds it again soon.
