Our Take
Alexandra Burke's debut album, Overcome, is a mixed bag of pop perfection and cringe-worthy cliches. The X Factor winner certainly knows how to hit those high notes, but sometimes it feels like she's trying too hard to impress. The album kicks off with the infectious lead single "Bad Boys," featuring Flo Rida. It's a catchy, dancefloor-friendly banger that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Burke's powerful vocals shine on tracks like "Broken Heels" and "All Night Long," proving she has the chops to be a true pop diva. However, things start to veer off course with the overly cheesy ballads like "Hallelujah" and "The Silence." It's as if Burke is trying to channel the ghost of Whitney Houston, but ends up sounding more like a bad karaoke impersonation. Overall, Overcome is a solid effort from Alexandra Burke, but it falls short of being a truly standout album. Fans of modern pop music will find something to enjoy here, but those looking for originality and depth might want to look elsewhere. Alexandra Burke may have won The X Factor, but she still has some work to do before she truly conquers the music world.
