Our Take

In the grand tradition of psychedelic rock albums with delightfully suggestive titles, Head Machine delivers a mind-bending auditory experience with their latest release, "Orgasm." This British outfit seems to have taken a page out of the book of 60s legends like Pink Floyd and Cream, blending heavy riffage with ethereal sonic landscapes. From the opening track, it's clear that Head Machine is not afraid to push the boundaries of conventional rock music. "Electric Meat" hits you like a freight train, with distorted guitars and thunderous drums that sound like they're being played in a cathedral. It's a bold statement of intent that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Throughout "Orgasm," Head Machine treats us to a plethora of sonic delights, from the trippy, reverb-soaked guitars of "Cosmic Lust" to the frenetic, pulsating rhythms of "Mind Meltdown." The band showcases their versatility, seamlessly blending elements of blues, funk, and even a touch of prog rock to create a truly eclectic listening experience. However, for all its musical experimentation, "Orgasm" does have its flaws. Some tracks meander a bit too much, losing focus and failing to deliver a satisfying pay-off. And while the production is generally top-notch, there are moments where the mix feels a bit cluttered, obscuring the band's intricate playing. Overall, Head Machine's "Orgasm" is a wild ride through the annals of psychedelia, offering up plenty of thrills and spills for those willing to take the plunge. It may not be a perfect album, but it's certainly a memorable one.

About the artist

Head Machine

Ah, HEAD MACHINE, the enigmatic musical project that has left fans scratching their heads and tapping their feet in equal measure. This mysterious group, fronted by an unknown figure known only as "The Head," has been making waves in the music scene with their genre-defying sound and eccentric approach to performance. Hailing from parts unknown, HEAD MACHINE burst onto the scene with their debut album "Orgasm" in 1970. This psychedelic masterpiece perfectly showcases the band's blend of rock, blues, and experimental influences, leaving listeners simultaneously bewildered and in awe. With tracks like "Make the Feeling Last" and "Climax," HEAD MACHINE's music has a way of getting under your skin and staying there. The band's ability to seamlessly meld heavy guitar riffs with trippy synthesizers and soulful vocals sets them apart from their contemporaries in a way that is both refreshing and intoxicating. But perhaps what truly sets HEAD MACHINE apart is their near-mythical live performances. The band's penchant for playing in dimly lit, smoke-filled rooms, with The Head's face obscured by a rotating series of bizarre masks, creates an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue that is impossible to resist. In a world where cookie-cutter pop stars reign supreme, HEAD MACHINE is a breath of fresh air. They are unapologetically weird, unapologetically brilliant, and unapologetically themselves. And for that, we salute them. Who knows what the future holds for HEAD MACHINE, but one thing is for certain: it's sure to be one hell of a ride.
