Our Take
Grant Green Quartet's latest offering, "Oleo," is a masterclass in jazz improvisation, with each member of the quartet bringing their A-game to the table. From the opening track to the final note, Green's guitar work shimmers and shines, never missing a beat. The chemistry between Green, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes is undeniable, as they effortlessly weave in and out of intricate melodies and harmonies. Clark's piano playing is fluid and melodic, perfectly complementing Green's soulful guitar riffs. Standout tracks include the funky "Countdown," the laid-back groove of "Sonny's Crib," and the energetic "Oleo," which showcases each member's impressive technical skills. However, "Oleo" is not without its flaws. Some tracks feel a bit formulaic, lacking the spark of creativity that defines the quartet's best work. Additionally, Green's guitar playing, while undoubtedly impressive, can sometimes feel a bit repetitive. Overall, "Oleo" is a solid effort from the Grant Green Quartet, showcasing their undeniable talent and musical prowess. Fans of classic jazz will no doubt find something to love in this album, but those looking for something more innovative may be left wanting.
