If Pitchfork did UK tours, we'd probably consider starting in Glasgow or Brighton. The Thermals hail from Portland, Oregon, a place known more for its indie rock scene than its punk bands. But don't be fooled by their Pacific Northwest origins - these guys have some serious attitude. "Not Like Any Other Feeling" does exactly what it says on the tin - it's not like any other feeling. The album kicks off with the swaggering "In Every Way" - a song that screams defiance and determination. Frontman Hutch Harris's snarling vocals are the perfect foil to Kathy Foster's pounding bass lines. Tracks like "A Stare Like Yours" and "The Mirror" showcase The Thermals' ability to blend punk energy with melodic sensibility. The band's raw, unpolished sound gives the album a sense of urgency and immediacy. It's like they're playing in your living room, and you can't help but mosh along. But it's not all about attitude and aggression. "Never Listening" slows things down a bit, with Harris's introspective lyrics giving us a glimpse into his inner turmoil.
