Our Take
The Steep Canyon Rangers have managed to perfectly capture the essence of North Carolina in their latest album, North Carolina Songbook. From the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the bustling streets of Asheville, this record is a love letter to the band's home state. With their signature bluegrass sound and tight harmonies, the Steep Canyon Rangers pay tribute to some of North Carolina's most iconic musicians, including Doc Watson and James Taylor. Each track is a nostalgic journey through the cultural history of the Tar Heel State, with the band putting their own unique spin on classic songs. Highlights include their foot-stomping rendition of "Wagon Wheel" and the hauntingly beautiful "Carolina in My Mind." The musicianship on display here is top-notch, with each member of the band showcasing their incredible talent throughout the album. However, as much as I appreciate the Steep Canyon Rangers' dedication to their roots, there are moments where the album feels a bit too safe and predictable. It would have been nice to see them take more risks and push the boundaries of the genre. Overall, North Carolina Songbook is a charming and heartfelt tribute to the band's home state, filled with toe-tapping tunes and beautiful melodies. Whether you're a fan of bluegrass or just appreciate good music, this album is definitely worth a listen.
