Our Take
Our Take
Ah, The Strokes. The band that made hipsters feel cool and mainstream radio stations feel alternative. Their latest album, "New England Gateway," is a mixed bag of nostalgic riffs and uninspired lyrics.
The opening track, "London Calling Pt. 2," kicks things off with a bang (literally, thanks to drummer Fabrizio Moretti). Julian Casablancas' signature vocals croon over crunchy guitars, reminding us why we fell in love with the band in the first place.
But as the album progresses, it becomes clear that The Strokes are stuck in a time warp. "Oxford Circus Blues" sounds like a rejected B-side from their 2001 breakthrough album, "Is This It." It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's certainly not groundbreaking.
The standout track, "Brighton Beach Bonanza," shows the band experimenting with new sounds and textures. A funky bassline drives the song forward, while Casablancas sings about summer romance and regret.
Overall, "New England Gateway" is a solid effort from The Strokes, but it's nothing we haven't heard before. Fans of the band will find plenty to love here, but those looking for innovation may be left wanting more. Let's hope their next album takes us to new sonic territories.
