Our Take
David Bowie's "Never Let Me Down" has us feeling like we've been stood up on a musical blind date. This 1987 release sees Bowie stepping into the realm of pop rock, but unfortunately, it falls flat. From the overly polished production to the lacklustre songwriting, this album fails to live up to Bowie's iconic discography. The title track, "Never Let Me Down," has a catchy chorus, but ultimately feels forgettable in the grand scheme of Bowie's repertoire. Tracks like "Zeroes" and "Shining Star (Makin' My Love)" have potential, but get lost in the midst of the album's overall mediocrity. Bowie's vocals are as strong as ever, but they can't save this sinking ship of an album. Production-wise, "Never Let Me Down" sounds like it's trying too hard to fit into the 80s pop scene, resulting in a sound that feels dated even by 1987 standards.
