Our Take
Silversun Pickups have always been a band that teeters on the edge of mainstream success and underground cool. Their latest offering, "Neck of the Woods," sees them leaning more towards the former, with a polished sound that's sure to attract a wider audience. Opening track "Skin Graph" kicks things off with a bang, showcasing the band's signature blend of ethereal vocals and crunchy guitars. It's a strong start, but unfortunately, the album doesn't quite maintain that level of energy throughout. Tracks like "Make Believe" and "Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)" feel a bit too polished, lacking the raw edge that made Silversun Pickups so exciting in the past. That being said, there are still moments of brilliance on "Neck of the Woods." "Mean Spirits" is a brooding, atmospheric track that showcases lead singer Brian Aubert's haunting vocals, while "Dots and Dashes (Enough Already)" is a catchy, danceable number that's sure to get stuck in your head. Overall, "Neck of the Woods" is a solid effort from Silversun Pickups, but it may leave diehard fans craving the band's earlier, grittier sound. If you're new to the band, this album is a good introduction to their sound. Just don't expect anything groundbreaking.
