If Pitchfork was editing reviews back in 1989, Edwyn Collins' "Hope and Despair", "Nation Shall Speak Unto Nation" would have probably gotten two stars, and a snide remark about his bordering-on-cheesy voice. Fast-forward more than three decades, and the sound that once might have seemed dated now feels like a refreshing throwback. The album's mix of jangly guitars, catchy hooks, and Collins' unmistakable croon is a winning formula that just can't be replicated. Tracks like "A Girl Like You" and "The Magic Piper (Of Love)" are pure pop perfection, while deeper cuts like "Leviathan" showcase Collins' knack for storytelling. Sure, the production may sound a bit tinny by today's standards, but that's all part of the charm. "Nation Shall Speak Unto Nation" is not a flawless album - some tracks do veer into soppy territory - but it's a damn good time from start to finish.
