Our Take
Sting, oh Sting. The man, the myth, the tantric legend. His latest offering, "My Songs," is a curious mix of nostalgia and ego-stroking that only a pop icon of his calibre could pull off. The album opens with a revamped version of "Brand New Day," because apparently the old day just wasn't cutting it anymore. Sting's distinctive vocals are as smooth as ever, but underneath the glossy production lies a certain lack of inspiration. Tracks like "Every Breath You Take" and "Roxanne" are given a modern makeover, but it's hard not to feel like they're just cashing in on past glories. Sting's insistence on rehashing his hits may leave some fans scratching their heads, wondering if he has any new tricks up his sleeve. That being said, there are moments of brilliance on "My Songs." "Shape of My Heart" is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases Sting's songwriting prowess. And the reggae-infused "Fields of Gold" is a welcome departure from the pop-heavy sound of the rest of the album. In the end, "My Songs" is a mixed bag. Sting may be a musical icon, but even legends have their off days. This album is a fun romp down memory lane, but it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity for the veteran musician to push himself in new and exciting directions. Verdict: 6.5/10
