Our Take
To call Rihanna's debut album "Music of the Sun/A Girl Like Me" a rollercoaster of musical styles would be an understatement. Much like a confused tourist in Barbados, Rihanna seems to have no idea which direction to take. Is she a reggae princess or a pop diva? The answer is both, and neither. Opening track "Pon de Replay" sets the tone with its infectious Caribbean beat, making you want to grab a coconut bra and dance the night away. But just as you're getting into the groove, Rihanna switches gears with the saccharine sweet "SOS". It's like going from a beach party to a birthday party in the blink of an eye. Throughout the album, Rihanna flits between genres like a butterfly on speed. From the dancehall vibes of "If It's Lovin' That You Want" to the emo balladry of "Unfaithful", she never stays in one musical lane for too long. It's like she's trying to be all things to all people, but ends up being nothing to anyone. But despite its lack of cohesiveness, there's something undeniably charming about "Music of the Sun/A Girl Like Me". Rihanna's raw talent shines through, even if it's buried under layers of Auto-Tune and questionable production choices. It may not be a masterpiece, but it's certainly an interesting look at the early days of a pop legend in the making.
