Our Take
Our Take
Don Cornell’s latest offering, “Most of All,” is a delightful romp through the golden age of crooning. The album harkens back to a time when charm and charisma were as important as vocal chops, and Cornell delivers on both fronts with aplomb. From the moment he opens his mouth on the title track, you can’t help but be swept away by his smooth, velvety voice.
With arrangements that are lush and full of swing, “Most of All” is a love letter to the classic American songbook. Cornell’s impeccable phrasing and heartfelt delivery bring new life to standards like “Stardust” and “Moonlight Serenade,” making them feel fresh and relevant once again.
But it’s not all smooth sailing on this voyage down memory lane. There are a few missteps along the way, such as the slightly dated production on “In the Chapel in the Moonlight,” which feels a tad bit cheesy compared to the rest of the album. And while Cornell’s voice is undeniably charming, there are moments where his lack of range becomes a bit too noticeable.
Overall, though, “Most of All” is a charming and enjoyable listen that will transport you back to a time when music was all about romance and elegance. Don Cornell may not be a household name anymore, but this album proves that his timeless appeal is as strong as ever.
