When it comes to the Monteverdi Vespers 1610, you know you're in for a religious experience - and I don't mean in a "listen to this album or you're going to hell" kind of way. The Dunedin Consort, led by the ever-so-stylish John Butt, have really outdone themselves with this divine offering.
From the moment the first note hits your eardrums, you're transported to a world of choral beauty, where angels probably sound this good when they sing (I mean, I've never actually heard an angel sing, but I imagine it's pretty close). The Consort's attention to detail is second to none, with every voice blending seamlessly to create a heavenly harmony that'll have you reaching for your closest incense burner.
Butt's direction is masterful, guiding the ensemble through this sprawling work with the precision of a surgeon (a musical surgeon, if you will). The instrumentalists are on point, providing a lush backdrop for the voices to soar above like a flock of seraphim.
So, if you're looking for an album that'll have you feeling all kinds of spiritual without having to step foot in a church, the Monteverdi Vespers 1610 is the perfect choice. Just be warned - you'll be humming that Agnus Dei for days after listening. Blessed be the Dunedin Consort, for they have truly delivered a masterpiece.
