Our Take
In the vast, ever-expanding landscape of music, there are rare gems that shine brighter than the rest. And then there's Dollar Store Money Music. This album, to put it bluntly, is a hot mess. But hey, isn't that what makes it so entertaining? From the opening track, "Bargain Basement Boogie", to the closer, "Penny Pinching Blues", each song on this album is a chaotic blend of mismatched melodies and absurd lyrics. It's like a musical mash-up of a garage sale and a dumpster dive, with a touch of comedy thrown in for good measure. Lead singer Penny Parnell's voice may not be the most polished, but it's full of charm and character. And the band's DIY approach to music production gives the album a raw, unfiltered feel that's oddly endearing. But let's not overlook the lyrics, which can only be described as delightfully bizarre. Take, for example, the track "Dollar Dreamin'", where Parnell waxes poetic about the joys of budget shopping whilst sipping champagne. It's a surreal experience that will leave you scratching your head in the best possible way. So, is Dollar Store Money Music a masterpiece? Far from it. But if you're in the mood for something offbeat and unapologetically weird, this album might just be your cup of tea. Just remember to bring your sense of humour along for the ride.
