Our Take
Ah, Moana 2, the inevitable sequel to the Disney smash hit soundtrack that had us all singing "How Far I'll Go" on repeat for months on end. Various Performers take on the challenge of capturing lightning in a bottle for a second time, and while they don't quite reach the heights of the original, there are still plenty of gems to be found on this ambitious follow-up. The album kicks off with the energetic "Great Sea Adventure," a catchy tune that sets the tone for the rest of the soundtrack. Lead vocalist Auli'i Cravalho once again shines with her powerful voice, effortlessly navigating the emotional highs and lows of the songs. One of the standout tracks is "Island Rhythms," a fun and infectious number that will have you dancing in your seat. The blend of traditional Polynesian sounds with modern pop sensibilities is done with such flair that it's impossible not to be swept away by the music. However, not every track on Moana 2 hits the mark. "Lost at Sea" feels a bit too derivative of the original film's standout songs, and "Underwater Melodies" doesn't quite have the same emotional impact as its predecessors. Overall, Various Performers have delivered a solid sequel to Moana, with enough good moments to satisfy fans of the first soundtrack. While it may not reach the heights of its predecessor, Moana 2 is still a worthwhile listen for those looking to recapture the magic of the first film.
