Our Take
The Chainsmokers' latest effort, "Memories...Do Not Open," is like stepping into a time machine back to the early 2010s when overproduced EDM-pop ruled the airwaves. With their signature formula of catchy hooks, generic lyrics, and predictable drops, this album is about as refreshing as a warm glass of flat lemonade. From the forgettable opener "The One" to the uninspired collaboration with Coldplay on "Something Just Like This," The Chainsmokers seem content to stay firmly within their comfort zone. Tracks like "Paris" and "Break Up Every Night" attempt to inject some variety into the mix, but ultimately fall flat due to their lack of depth and originality. The duo's attempts at emotional depth on songs like "Honest" and "Bloodstream" come across as melodramatic and insincere, with lyrics that could have been pulled straight from a teenage diary. Even the song "Young" feels out of touch, as The Chainsmokers try to capture the fleetingness of youth without acknowledging their own status as aging EDM bros.
