Our Take
Our Take
The Police "Melbourne" Review:
After a six-year hiatus, The Police return with a strange and unexpected offering in their latest album "Melbourne." This record is a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from euphoria to confusion, leaving listeners questioning whether they should be dancing or scratching their heads in bewilderment.
Sting's distinctive vocals shine through in tracks like "Tram Ride Blues," where he croons about the trials and tribulations of public transportation in the Australian city. The band's signature reggae-infused sound takes a backseat in this album, replaced by a cacophony of experimental instrumentals that leave us scratching our heads wondering if we accidentally stumbled into a jazz club.
Despite the chaotic nature of the music, there is no denying the undeniable chemistry between Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland. The trio's musical prowess is on full display in tracks like "Purple Raincoat Parade," where they seamlessly blend genres like ska, punk, and avant-garde to create a sonic landscape that is as confusing as it is captivating.
While "Melbourne" may not be The Police's most accessible album, it is certainly their most daring and adventurous. This record is a testament to the band's willingness to push boundaries and take risks, resulting in a musical experience that is as polarising as it is unforgettable. Strap in, because "Melbourne" is one wild ride you won't soon forget.
