Our Take
Our Take
Upon first listen, Lithics' latest album "Mating Surfaces" is like a punch in the face from a musical unicorn. The Portland-based band has crafted a collection of songs that feel like they were beamed in from a parallel universe where post-punk never died and new wave never went out of style.
The album kicks off with "Excuse Generator", a jittery track that sets the tone for what's to come. Vocalist Aubrey Hornor's deadpan delivery pairs perfectly with the band's angular, frenetic instrumentation. It's like Gang of Four meets Devo with a dash of Siouxsie Sioux thrown in for good measure.
Tracks like "Boyce" and "Dancing Guy" showcase the band's knack for crafting catchy, off-kilter hooks that will have you tapping your foot and scratching your head in equal measure. The album's production is raw and minimalist, giving each instrument room to breathe and adding to the overall sense of urgency that permeates the record.
But don't let the lo-fi aesthetic fool you – there's a meticulous attention to detail at play here. Every drum fill, every guitar riff, every deadpan vocal delivery feels deliberate and purposeful. It's like the band has taken a scalpel to the post-punk playbook and meticulously reassembled it into something all their own.
In conclusion, "Mating Surfaces" is a bold statement from a band unafraid to push boundaries and challenge expectations. It's the kind of album that will make you want to dance, laugh, and scratch your head all at once. In other words, it's music to my ears.
