Our Take

Ah, The Smiths - the band that brought together the angst of Morrissey with the jangly guitar work of Johnny Marr. Their live performances are the stuff of legend, so when I heard about this newly released Picture Disc of their 1984 show at Markthalle in Hamburg, I knew I had to get my hands on it.

From the iconic opening chords of "William, It Was Really Nothing" to the haunting strains of "Reel Around the Fountain", this album captures The Smiths at the peak of their powers. Morrissey's vocals are as melancholic and witty as ever, while Marr's guitar work shines through the mix, adding layer upon layer of sonic intrigue.

Highlights of the set include a blistering rendition of "What Difference Does It Make?" that had the crowd in a frenzy, as well as a spine-tingling version of "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" that showcased Morrissey's unparalleled ability to capture the alienation and longing of youth.
