Our Take

IMAGINE DRAGONS may have set the music world on fire with their unapologetically bombastic anthems in the past, but their latest offering, "Loomin," feels more like a damp squib than a fiery eruption.

From the opening track, "Rainy Day Blues," the album sets a rather dreary tone, with Dan Reynolds' usually powerhouse vocals feeling oddly muted and lackluster. It's as if someone let the air out of their trademark stadium-sized sound.

Tracks like "Gloomy Monday" and "Soggy Socks" continue in this vein, with the band seemingly determined to drain all the fun out of their music. Even the more uptempo songs like "Damp Disco" and "Misty Mountain Hop" feel weighed down by a sense of melancholy that just doesn't quite gel with the band's usual bombast.

That being said, there are moments of brightness on the album, such as the shimmering guitars on "Sunshine Shuffle" and the infectious hooks of "Rainbow Rave." But these moments are few and far between, leaving "Loomin" feeling more like a slog through a never-ending rainstorm than a joyous celebration.

Ultimately, IMAGINE DRAGONS may have been aiming for a more introspective, mature sound with "Loomin," but they've sacrificed the excitement and energy that made them stand out in the first place. Here's hoping they can find their way back to the light on their next release.

About the artist

Imagine Dragons

Imagine Dragons are the quirky, whimsical quartet from Las Vegas who have taken the music world by storm with their infectious blend of pop-rock anthems and electronic flourishes. Frontman Dan Reynolds's soaring vocals have captivated audiences globally, while the band's energetic live performances have cemented their status as one of the most dynamic live acts around. Formed in 2008, Imagine Dragons rapidly rose to fame with their debut album "Night Visions" in 2012, which spawned hits like "Radioactive" and "Demons." Since then, the band has continued to push boundaries with each release, experimenting with different genres and sonic landscapes to keep their sound fresh and exciting. Their latest album, "Mercury – Act 1," sees Imagine Dragons delving even deeper into their eclectic musical influences, incorporating elements of R&B, hip-hop, and even avant-garde pop. Tracks like "Wrecked" and "Follow You" showcase the band's ability to seamlessly blend genres while maintaining their signature anthemic sound. But don't be fooled by their mainstream success – Imagine Dragons are not afraid to tackle complex themes in their music, from mental health to societal issues. Reynolds's heartfelt lyrics are often introspective and deeply personal, adding an emotional depth to their catchy tunes. So whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual listener, Imagine Dragons are sure to leave you feeling uplifted and energized with their infectious melodies and feel-good vibes. This band is one to watch – they're not just imagining success, they're living it.
