Our Take
Our Take
Lonnie Donegan, the original skiffler extraordinaire, returns with a double dose of toe-tapping tunes in his latest release, "Lonnie / Showcase." This album is a delightful romp through Donegan's signature blend of folk, blues, and rockabilly, guaranteed to get even the most stoic of listeners up and dancing.
"Lonnie" kicks things off with infectious energy, as Donegan's gravelly vocals and rollicking guitar work on tracks like "Rock Island Line" and "Diggin' My Potatoes" transport us back to the heyday of 1950s skiffle. The raw, stripped-down production only adds to the authenticity of the experience, making it feel like Donegan is performing right in your living room.
But just when you think Donegan can't possibly top himself, he flips the script with "Showcase," a collection of covers that showcase his versatility as an artist. From the foot-stomping rendition of Lead Belly's "Midnight Special" to the soulful take on "Nobody's Child," Donegan proves that he's not afraid to step outside his comfort zone and try new things.
Overall, "Lonnie / Showcase" is a testament to Donegan's enduring legacy in the world of music. Whether you're a die-hard skiffle fan or just looking for something different to spice up your playlist, this album is sure to delight and entertain. So grab your dancing shoes and prepare to be whisked away on a journey through the musical stylings of a true legend. Cheers, Lonnie, for keeping the skiffle spirit alive and kicking!

About the artist
Lonnie Donegan
Lonnie Donegan, the man behind the legendary skiffle movement, was a true pioneer of British music in the 1950s. With his unique blend of folk, blues, and rock 'n' roll, Donegan brought a new sound to the UK music scene that would influence generations to come. Born in Glasgow in 1931, Donegan's musical talents were apparent from a young age. He learned to play multiple instruments, including the guitar, banjo, and violin, and soon began performing in local clubs and pubs. But it wasn't until the release of his hit single "Rock Island Line" in 1954 that Donegan shot to stardom. With his distinctive voice and energetic stage presence, Donegan quickly became a household name in the UK. His performances were known for their infectious energy and sing-along quality, with audiences clamouring to join in on hits like "Cumberland Gap" and "Putting on the Style." But perhaps Donegan's most lasting legacy is his influence on the British music scene as a whole. His blend of American folk and blues with British sensibilities paved the way for future artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. Sadly, Donegan passed away in 2002, but his music lives on as a testament to his enduring talent and influence. In an industry that is constantly changing, Lonnie Donegan remains a timeless icon of British music, forever immortalised as the King of Skiffle.
