Our Take
Ah, JOSE GONZALEZ, the soothing Swedish singer-songwriter who could put a caffeine-addicted corgi to sleep with his gentle strums and hushed vocals. His latest album, "Local Valley" (Green Vinyl), is like a warm hug from a distant relative you only see at family gatherings - comforting, familiar, and just a little bit awkward. The album kicks off with "Tjomme," a track that sets the tone for the rest of the record with its delicate fingerpicking and haunting harmonies. Gonzalez's lyrics, while touching on themes of love and loss, never quite rise above the level of twee introspection, leaving the listener with a sense of déjà vu that's as welcome as a soggy biscuit at teatime. "Swing" sees Gonzalez exploring new sonic textures, with layers of synths and percussion adding a welcome depth to his stripped-back sound. But while the experimentation is admirable, it can't quite hide the fact that underneath it all, Gonzalez is still singing about love, loneliness, and the passage of time - themes that feel as worn-out as a pair of old slippers. Overall, "Local Valley" is a pleasant listen that will undoubtedly appeal to Gonzalez's loyal fanbase.
