Our Take

Live albums can be a mixed bag - capturing the magic of a band in their natural element, or exposing their faults and flubs for all to hear. And let me tell you, the HORACE SILVER QUINTET's Live In Paris 1970 is definitely more of the former than the latter. From the very first notes of the opening track, "Song for My Father," you can feel the energy crackling in the air. Silver's piano playing is precise and intricate, never missing a beat. Bobby Hutcherson's vibes add a layer of ethereal beauty to the mix, while John B. Williams and Billy Cobham hold down the rhythm section with flair. The real standout, though, is Silver's compositions themselves. "The Natives Are Restless Tonight" is a rollicking tune that will have you tapping your feet and bobbing your head, while "Peace" provides a moment of contemplative introspection in the midst of all the excitement. But what truly sets this album apart is the live setting itself. The audience's enthusiastic applause and the occasional burst of chatter add an extra layer of atmosphere to the proceedings, making you feel like you're right there in the front row. In the end, Live In Paris 1970 is a must-listen for any jazz fan. It's a rollicking good time from start to finish, with enough surprises and delights to keep you coming back for more. So grab a glass of wine, sit back, and let the music wash over you. You won't regret it.
