Our Take
Our Take
Diving headfirst into the blues-filled euphoria of Paul Butterfield's Live In New York 1970 is like stumbling into a smoky, dimly lit jazz club in the heart of the Big Apple. The energy crackles in the air as Butterfield's harmonica wails and howls with soul-stirring emotion, backed by a band that could make even the most stoic of hipsters tap their feet in rhythm.
From the moment the opening track kicks in, you can feel the raw, unbridled passion that Butterfield and his band pour into every note. His voice is gravelly yet smooth, like a shot of whiskey followed by a sip of sweet tea. The music ebbs and flows, taking you on a journey through the heart of the blues, with twisting guitar solos that leave you breathless and pounding rhythms that make you want to get up and dance.
Tracks like "Born in Chicago" and "Mellow Down Easy" showcase Butterfield's mastery of the harmonica, while slower, soulful tunes like "Love March" and "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" tug at your heartstrings with their heartfelt lyrics and haunting melodies. The live recording captures the energy and emotion of a night in New York City, with the audience's cheers and applause adding to the electric atmosphere.
If you're a fan of the blues, or just looking for some music to lift your spirits and get your feet moving, Live In New York 1970 is a must-listen. Paul Butterfield may have left us too soon, but his music lives on in this electrifying performance that will leave you begging for an encore.

About the artist
Paul Butterfield
Paul Butterfield was a harmonica-playing virtuoso who brought the blues to a whole new audience in the 1960s. Born in Chicago in 1942, Butterfield quickly made a name for himself on the city's blues scene, playing with legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Butterfield formed his own band, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, in 1963, and they quickly became known for their electrifying live performances and innovative fusion of blues and rock. With Butterfield's soulful vocals and searing harmonica work, the band's sound was unlike anything else at the time. Their debut album, released in 1965, was a critical and commercial success, showcasing Butterfield's raw talent and the band's tight musicianship. Tracks like "Born in Chicago" and "Shake Your Money Maker" became instant classics, solidifying Butterfield's place in the pantheon of blues greats. Butterfield continued to push boundaries throughout his career, collaborating with artists from a wide range of genres and experimenting with new sounds and styles. His influence can be heard in the work of countless musicians, from The Allman Brothers to Eric Clapton. Sadly, Butterfield's life was cut short in 1987, but his legacy lives on through his timeless music. With his unmatched talent and trailblazing spirit, Paul Butterfield will forever be remembered as a true pioneer of the blues.
