Our Take

Ah, Samson Live at Reading '81, the album that reminds us all that not every performance can be a stellar success. From the opening chords of "Riding with the Angels," it's clear that this recording is going to be a wild ride - and not necessarily in a good way. Frontman Bruce Dickinson gives it his all, but his vocals often fall flat, leaving the listener wishing for more from the man who would later go on to conquer the world with Iron Maiden. The band as a whole seems to lack the tightness and cohesion that would elevate them to rock god status. While the energy of the live performance is undeniable, it's not enough to make up for the lacklustre musicianship on display.
