Our Take

Donald Byrd may have left us in 2013, but his music is still very much alive, as proven by this electrifying live recording of his performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973.

From the moment Byrd and his band hit the stage, it is clear that they are on fire. The energy is palpable, the grooves are infectious, and the solos are nothing short of mind-blowing. It's easy to see why Byrd was known for his captivating live performances.

The setlist is a perfect blend of Byrd's own compositions and covers of jazz classics, all reimagined in his own unique style. Tracks like "Black Byrd" and "Flight Time" showcase Byrd's virtuosity on the trumpet, while covers of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island" and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" pay homage to his jazz roots.

The band is in top form throughout the performance, with each member given the chance to shine. Drummer Billy Hart lays down a solid foundation, while keyboardist Larry Mizell adds layers of funky goodness to the mix. And let's not forget the killer basslines courtesy of Chuck Rainey.

Overall, this album is a must-listen for any jazz aficionado. Donald Byrd may no longer be with us, but his music will live on forever, and this live recording is a testament to his enduring legacy. So sit back, relax, and let Donald Byrd take you on a musical journey like no other.
