Our Take

BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST Live – More Like "Live-Less"?

It's a rare occurrence when a band's live album manages to capture the energy and essence of their on-stage performance. Unfortunately, Barclay James Harvest's "Live" falls flat in this department.

From the very first track, it's clear that something is missing. The crispness and clarity of their studio recordings are replaced with muddy sound quality and lackluster instrumentation. It's like they left all the magic in the studio and brought a watered-down version of themselves to the stage.

The vocals, once soaring and emotive, now sound strained and off-key. The instrumentals, once soaring and complex, now feel muddled and uninspired. It's a shame to see a band with such a rich discography deliver such a lacklustre live experience.

That being said, there are moments of brilliance scattered throughout the album. "Mockingbird" manages to capture some of the band's former glory, with haunting melodies and powerful vocals. And "Hymn" provides a touching moment of reflection amidst the chaos.

Overall, Barclay James Harvest's "Live" feels more like a missed opportunity than a triumphant live album. Fans looking to relive the magic of their concerts may be left feeling underwhelmed. Stick to the studio recordings for the full Barclay James Harvest experience.
