Our Take
Our Take
ELTON JOHN's "Leather Jackets" is a perplexing conundrum wrapped in a shiny, leather-clad enigma. At first glance, one might be forgiven for thinking they've stumbled upon a forgotten gem from the depths of the '80s time capsule. But upon closer inspection, it becomes abundantly clear that this album is a mixed bag of perplexing proportions.
The opening track, "Heartache All Over the World," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its cheesy synths and over-the-top production. It's like a guilty pleasure you can't help but sing along to, even though you know deep down it's not exactly high art.
As the album progresses, we're treated to a rollercoaster ride of musical styles and influences, from the reggae-infused "Angeline" to the slick, radio-friendly "Slow Rivers." Elton's vocals are as strong as ever, but even his undeniable talent can't fully save some of the more questionable tracks on offer.
"Leather Jackets" is a testament to Elton John's enduring popularity and creative spirit, but it also serves as a reminder that not every artist hits the mark every time. While there are certainly moments of brilliance here, they're unfortunately overshadowed by the album's more forgettable offerings.
In the end, "Leather Jackets" is a curious addition to Elton John's discography, one that will surely divide fans and critics alike. It's worth a listen for die-hard enthusiasts, but casual listeners may want to approach with caution.
