Our Take

After listening to DIE ENTTAUSCHUNG's latest album, Lavamanin, I am left feeling not just disappointed, but utterly bewildered. This German avant-garde jazz quartet has truly outdone themselves this time, but not in the way you might expect. Lavamanin is a cacophony of discordant noises, erratic rhythms, and nonsensical lyrics that will leave you scratching your head in confusion.

From the haunting wails of the saxophone to the erratic drumming that sounds like someone dropped a set of pots and pans down a flight of stairs, there is not a single moment of cohesion on this record. It's as though the band members were playing completely different songs at the same time, hoping that somehow it would all come together in post-production. Spoiler alert: it didn't.

The track "Schnitzel Nein Nein" is a prime example of the chaos that reigns throughout Lavamanin. It starts off with a promising bassline, but is quickly overshadowed by a cacophony of screeching horns and off-key vocals that will make you question your sanity.

In conclusion, Lavamanin is a bold experiment in avant-garde jazz that falls flat on its face. DIE ENTTAUSCHUNG may have set out to push boundaries and challenge conventions, but in the end, they have created a gloriously messy disaster that is best left untouched. Sorry, DIE ENTTAUSCHUNG, but this album is a hard pass from me.

Comprised of some of the most adventurous musicians in the scene, including Axel Dörner, Rudi Mahall, Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Jan Roder, and Uli Jennessen, DIE ENTTAUSCHUNG is not your average jazz outfit. Their music is a heady concoction of free improvisation, intricate compositions, and fearless experimentation. Their live performances are legendary, with each member feeding off the energy of the others to create something truly special and unpredictable. Whether playing to a sold-out crowd in Berlin or a small, intimate club in Paris, DIE ENTTAUSCHUNG brings their A-game every time.
