Our Take

In a world overrun with auto-tuned pop stars and manufactured melodies, MARTIN BEST's latest album "Riquier: The Last of the Troubadours" is a refreshing blast from the past. The sheer audacity of releasing an album of 13th-century troubadour music in 2021 is a feat in itself, but Best pulls it off with style and grace.

From the first strum of the lute to the hauntingly beautiful vocals, each track on "Riquier" takes the listener on a journey through medieval Europe. Best's mastery of ancient instruments and poetic lyrics transport us back to a time when minstrels roamed the countryside and courtly love was all the rage.

Standout tracks include the mesmerizing "Lament for Blanche of Castile" and the toe-tapping "Sirventes: Muslims, Christians, Jews." Best's voice is as rich and melodious as a fine vintage wine, and his musicianship is second to none.

While "Riquier" may not be everyone's cup of tea, those with a taste for the eclectic and the obscure will find much to love in this album. So dust off your chainmail, grab a goblet of mead, and let MARTIN BEST take you on a musical journey through the mists of time. Medieval times have never sounded so good.
