Lawrence Foster and the Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir may sound like they belong in a cheesy Dracula movie, but don't be fooled - this album is anything but campy. Their rendition of Kodaly's Te Deum & Psalmus Hungaricus is hauntingly beautiful, with the choir's angelic voices soaring over the orchestra's sweeping melodies. It's like being transported to a gothic cathedral in the heart of Transylvania.
But don't think for a second that they're all doom and gloom. Bartok's Cantata Profana & Transylvanian Dances inject a sense of playfulness and mischief into the mix. The orchestra's precision and energy are infectious, making you want to get up and dance around like a crazed vampire at a rave.
Foster's experience in the industry shines through in every note, his skill as a conductor elevating each piece to new heights. The Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir may not be a household name, but after listening to this album, they certainly should be.
