Our Take

Ah, SOUNDGARDEN, the grunge gods are back with their long-awaited album "King Animal." But are they here to reclaim their throne or just rehash the same old tunes?

From the opening track "Been Away Too Long," it's clear that these Seattle rockers haven't missed a beat. Chris Cornell's vocals soar over Kim Thayil's signature guitar riffs, creating that classic Soundgarden sound that fans have come to love. The band is tight, the production is clean, and the songs are as heavy as ever.

But does "King Animal" bring anything new to the table? Not really. The band sticks to their tried and tested formula of churning out hard-hitting rock anthems with a hint of psychedelia. Tracks like "By Crooked Steps" and "A Thousand Days Before" showcase the band at their peak, blending heavy riffs with haunting melodies.

However, some tracks fall flat, like the forgettable "Halfway There" and the uninspired ballad "Bones of Birds." It's clear that Soundgarden are capable of more than just rehashing old ideas, but they seem content to play it safe on "King Animal."

Overall, "King Animal" is a solid comeback for Soundgarden, but it lacks the innovation and excitement of their earlier work. Fans of the band will no doubt enjoy rocking out to these new tunes, but don't expect any groundbreaking revelations from this album.

About the artist

Soundgarden

Soundgarden: Grunge Gods or Just Another Overrated Band? Hailing from the rainy city of Seattle, Soundgarden has been a force to be reckoned with in the rock music scene since the late 1980s. With their heavy guitar riffs, powerhouse vocals, and lyrics that straddle the line between existential angst and societal commentary, this band has left a lasting mark on the music world. Led by the enigmatic frontman Chris Cornell, whose vocal range could rival that of a operatic tenor, Soundgarden has managed to defy categorisation, seamlessly blending elements of metal, punk, and alternative rock into their own unique sound. Tracks like "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman" have become anthems for a generation of disaffected youth, while deeper cuts like "Jesus Christ Pose" showcase the band's willingness to tackle controversial themes head on. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. While Soundgarden may have a dedicated following and a slew of hit records under their belts, there are some who argue that the band is merely riding the coattails of the grunge movement, never quite reaching the iconic status of their contemporaries like Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Regardless of where you stand on the Soundgarden debate, there's no denying the band's impact on the music world. With their raw energy, killer guitar solos, and a frontman who can wail like nobody's business, Soundgarden is a band that demands to be heard. So grab your flannel shirt, crank up the volume, and decide for yourself: are Soundgarden grunge gods, or just another overrated band?
