Our Take

In typical Pitchfork fashion, we couldn't resist diving headfirst into the murky depths of VARIOUS ARTISTS' latest offering, "Emami: The Black Fishin." As the title suggests, this album is a deep-sea exploration of sound, a veritable treasure trove of sonic delights.

From the opening track, "Whale Song Symphony," we are transported to a watery wonderland, where the music ebbs and flows like the tides. Each song is a unique creature, a strange and beautiful fish swimming through the murky depths of the artist's imagination.

But don't let the aquatic theme fool you - this album is no mere gimmick. Tracks like "Electric Eel Funk" and "Siren Song Serenade" showcase the immense talent of the artists involved, with dazzling displays of musical virtuosity that will leave you gasping for air.

However, not every track hits the mark. "Crab Rave Redux" feels a bit stale, like a leftover fisherman's catch that's been sitting in the sun for too long. And "Jellyfish Jive" lacks the sting of some of the other tracks, feeling a bit too limp and gooey for our taste.
