Our Take

If you were hoping for a wild ride with the Thornton/Myer duo tackling Brahms' Cello Sonatas, you might want to buckle up and prepare for a smooth, but slightly underwhelming journey.

From the opening notes of Sonata No. 1 in E minor, it's clear that cellist Thornton and pianist Myer are skilled musicians with a strong understanding of Brahms' intricate compositions. Their technical prowess shines through in their precise playing and unwavering commitment to the music.

However, where the duo falls short is in their interpretation of the emotional depth and complexity that Brahms intended. While each movement is executed with polish and precision, there is a lack of spontaneity and emotional nuance that leaves the listener wanting more.
