Our Take

Rod Stewart, the man with the raspy voice and the iconic hair, has returned with yet another entry in his Great American Songbook series. "It Had To Be You" sees Stewart crooning his way through classic standards with his signature charm and charisma.

From the opening track, "You Go to My Head," Stewart's voice effortlessly glides over the lush orchestral arrangements, bringing a sense of nostalgia and romance to each song. His rendition of "Every Time We Say Goodbye" is especially poignant, with Stewart's soulful delivery tugging at the heartstrings of even the most jaded listener.

But it's not all smooth sailing on this album. Stewart's take on "They Can't Take That Away From Me" feels a bit lacklustre, lacking the spark and spontaneity that made the original so memorable. And his version of "Someone to Watch Over Me" is a tad too earnest, missing the playfulness that defines the best interpretations of this classic tune.

Overall, "It Had To Be You" is a solid addition to Rod Stewart's Great American Songbook series, showcasing his enduring talent and his deep love for these timeless songs. While it may not reach the heights of his earlier entries, there's still plenty to enjoy here for fans of Stewart and classic American music. So sit back, pour yourself a glass of whiskey, and let Rod Stewart serenade you into the night.
