Our Take

Ah, City Waites, the musical equivalent of a time machine back to the days when ruffs were in fashion and the plague was a legitimate concern. How The World Wags, their latest album, is a delightful romp through the bawdy, raucous world of 17th-century English folk music.

From the moment you press play, you're transported to a bustling market square, where minstrels serenade you with tales of love, loss, and the occasional tavern brawl. The jaunty melodies and twanging lute strings will have you tapping your feet and singing along in no time.

Lead vocalist Adam Phelps brings a devilish charm to the proceedings, his rich baritone weaving tales of lust and betrayal with gusto. The rest of the band are no slouches either, with tight harmonies and nimble fingers on display throughout.

Standout tracks include "The Jolly Butcher" with its infectious chorus, and "Greensleeves" given a lively, toe-tapping makeover. But it's the closing track, "The World Turned Upside Down", that truly steals the show, a haunting reminder that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

In conclusion, How The World Wags is a rollicking good time from start to finish. City Waites may be singing about a bygone era, but their music is as fresh and invigorating as ever. So grab a tankard of ale, kick off your shoes, and let yourself be whisked away to a simpler, more musically vibrant time. Cheers!
